Can acupuncture help menopause symptoms?
From BBC: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-47279032
Menopause is a time of troubling emotional and physical symptoms for some women. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) eases symptoms like hot flushes and sweats, but it's not suitable for all women. A small study published in BMJ Open suggests acupuncture may be worth considering as an alternative treatment. The Danish study found that five weeks of acupuncture in women with menopausal symptoms reduced hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances and emotional problems. Researchers at the University of Southern Denmark cautioned that they couldn't rule out that the results were down to the placebo effect. Acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine where fine needles are inserted at certain points on the body. Acupuncture treatment is available on the NHS usually for migraines or chronic headaches.
The study recruited 70 women with moderate-to-severe menopause symptoms who were split into two groups: control group who received no acupuncture until week six of the study; intervention group receiving weekly acupuncture treatments from experienced local doctors. Each participant completed a questionnaire to self-evaluate their symptoms at three and six weeks by which time, those in the intervention group recorded moderate improvements in all symptoms compared to those having no acupuncture.
Vanessa Southgate suffered from menopausal symptoms when she was 46 years old including early morning awakenings, bloating, foggy head, night sweats and anxiety but decided against HRT opting instead for alternative treatments including seeing Emma Vickers - licensed acupuncturist based in Brighton - whom Vanessa sees regularly for weekly sessions since experiencing significant relief after just a few sessions.
Dr Channa Jayasena said "I suspect that most of the effect of acupuncture is a placebo effect but anything that helps reduce symptom while increasing wellbeing despite being safe ought to be considered".
Presentation about Traditional Chinese Medicine
Xiangling Shi gave a presentation on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Harpenden ( for the Harpenden Complementary Health Network) on 12-06-2018. It was quite a big topic to cover in a brief presentation, as a qualified Chinese doctor has to study TCM in a specialised university for five years.
TCM treatment includes herbs, acupuncture, tuina, moxibustion, and other approaches.
She mainly discussed how and why Chinese herbs are effective, the safety, processes followed by Chinese herbalists, as compared to other herbal treatment methods…
We hope that TCM can benefit the health of more and more people.

Cordyceps
Commonly known as “caterpillar fungus”, or Dong chong xia cao in Chinese, Cordyceps (scientific name) is a wild fungus that grows high in the mountains and has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal herb. Its main benefits are to build up Qi in the lungs and strengthen yin-yang energy in the kidneys. When the energy in the lungs and kidneys is strong, the whole immune system is naturally enhanced. Modern scientific research has demonstrated that Cordyceps can improve lung, spleen and kidney function, boost the immune system, slow the aging process, protect the heart muscle, and hinder the growth of cancer cells.
So now you may be wondering: When, how and in what circumstances should Cordyceps be used?
For any condition related to:
- A depressed immune system – whether it be ME, diabetes, tuberculosis, cancer, chronic psoriasis or eczema, an overactive bladder, impotence, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, kidney failure, etc.
- Debilitation (lowered Qi) of the lungs – such as in chronic bronchitis, chronic coughing, asthma, hay fever, etc.
I treated two cases in the second category several years ago when I worked in Chelsea, London. Both patients had been told by doctors that their immune systems were compromised and they were looking for ways to strengthen it. I advised them to try a course of Cordyceps capsules (Cordyceps Sinesis extract, 300 mg per capsule, from China; two capsules to be taken three times daily). Both patients told me their “asthma was gone”, one of them three months later, the other five months later, after a regular course of Cordyceps. They no longer had any cough, phlegm or shortness of breath even in winter, whereas previously they were sometimes short of breath even in summer.
How should you take it?
Cordyceps in capsule form is definitely the easiest form to take, and the most popular. Take according to instructions
However, it can still be taken in the traditional way, by cooking it in a soup, or on its own as other herbs are prepared, then consumed. Or it can be added to wine and left to macerate for awhile, and the wine then enjoyed!
What sort of health conditions is Cordyceps used for?
It is widely used by people with chronic health problems related to immunodeficiency, such as chronic fatigue, susceptibility to frequent colds or flu or other infections, or strongly allergic reactions.
Menopause
The menopause starts when your body’s level of the hormone estrogen falls to very low levels and your menstrual periods stop for good. Sometimes, younger women need a hysterectomy to treat health problems such as endometriosis or cancer, and after the surgery they will enter into what is known as induced or surgery menopause. The main symptoms of menopause include night sweats, hot flushes, insomnia, mood swings, irritability, headaches, urinary frequency and vaginal problems. Although HRT uses prescription drugs to replace the hormones which the ovaries stop producing at the time of the menopause, HRT is taken only for short periods of time and is not recommended for women who have vaginal bleeding, suspected breast cancer, a history of heart disease, or chronic liver disease.
According to Chinese medical theory, the menopause is commonly caused by liver and kidney YIN deficiency as age increases. Herbal remedies can improve the YIN of the liver and kidneys and restore the YIN/YANG balance. It is a natural and safe treatment, avoiding the risks and side-effects of pharmaceutical medicine (cancer, bleeding, etc.). While the menopause symptoms themselves are reduced during treatment, the herbal remedies bring benefits to your general health and well-being for the future. Why not try it?
